Erastus was a city steward in Corinth when Paul was in the city around the year 51 (Romans 16:23). He was also a believer who was mentioned in 2 Timothy 4:20 and Acts 19:22. In 1928 the stone in the image above was discovered which reads, “Erastus in return for his aedileship paved it at his own expense.” Due to the rare nature of the name and the biblical references scholars believe the Erastus Stone is referring to the same person. The date of Erastus’ service is also one of the ways scholars date when Paul was in Corinth.
